Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of SiliconeZone Large Angel Food Cake Pan, RedCustomer Review: The cake pan from Hell Summary: 1 Stars
I received this Christmas morning after hinting that I wanted to try baking with a non-stick silicone pan.
I rated it one star because I couldn't get ZERO stars to work.
After having cooked perhaps a hundred angel food cakes--made both from scratch and using packaged mixes--in my old aluminum pan, I am extremely disappointed with this product. The aluminum pans are not perfect to be sure, or I wouldn't have looked so longingly at this one. On the old pan, the cake has to be carefully separated from both sides and bottom with a slender knife, and they're a pain to wash.
After watching "Chef Tony" pitch these on late night TV--or very similar blue ones--wiping out the pan with a damp cloth, I was astonished to find this was damn near impossible to clean. Soaking in very hot soapy water loosened the easy stuff but even scrubbing extremely hard with a sponge and then a white scrubbing pad had little effect on the crease between the bottom and the side.
Worse, the cake burns on the top (bottom when cooking) before the exposed part turns the traditional golden brown signaling it is done--in other words, it cooks unevenly. After one somewhat dismal cake, I lowered the cooking time to 30 minutes (from 47 in the aluminum pan), but the same thing occurred--the top was burned and the bottom not completely done.
And it doesn't just "pop" out--you still need to slide a knife around the side to get it loose. I'm trying it one more time--#3--at a lower heat because I want it to work. If it doesn't Amazon can expect it back.
